We all fear that one day we will get the terrible news that we have an illness of some kind. Shock, disbelief, fear, sadness, denial, and feeling overwhelmed can be just a few of the emotions people experience when they are diagnosed with an illness. For most people, they are only told things pertaining to the illness itself and the treatment process. Less attention is paid to the emotional and psychological support that is needed during this terrifying time. Women need as much support during this time as possible. Women also need to learn valuable skills to reduce the stress that they are likely experiencing due to the diagnosis. In addition to learning how to cope with the emotions and stress associated with an illness, talking to a therapist in an individual and/or group setting can be extremely cathartic and healing.
